Monster (School Book) Blog Entry #5

This is book is titled "Monster" and is written by Walter Dean Myers. I read the 100 pages and it is about a trial of men accused for walking in to a store and taking cigarettes and killing the owner of the store. I finished the book and in the end (Spoilers!) James King a man that Steve committed the crime with got put in jail. Steve didn't have to go to jail and he got to stay home with his parents and brother. Steve started fooling around with his camera and started making small films.

I could picture how Steve felt that he didn't have to go and spend 20 years in jail. I visualized that he was hugging his parents and spending time with hit brother. I could feel his excitement. That brought me back to the part where he had to be accused, and after 5 months he finally can stay home.

Mood is a big part is every book. This book I didn't really get a certain mood from this book. I could tell Steve was miserable and just wanted this trial to end and he wouldn't be guilty. I would have liked feel a lot more happy that he didn't have to go to jail. I probably got this feeling because I couldn't really connect to the characters, because I have been put threw a trial that could end up with me going to jail.

Overall this book was pretty good, it didn't have to many intense moments, but it was fun to ride along in Steve Harmon's journey.

Monster (School Book) Blog Entry #4

This is book is titled "Monster" and is written by Walter Dean Myers. I read the 100 pages and it is about a trial of men accused for walking in to a store and taking cigarettes and killing the owner of the store. This time Richard Evans a man who was in the cigarette crime, is in the court room getting asked questions about Mr. King a man who he h as been helping steal money.

There are definitely things that are wrong and you shouldn't do. Like killing somebody, stealing, and lying. Those are things I think you should never do. Steve turned out not killing Mr. Nesbitt, he didn't do anything wrong he said. He was just the lookout.

The courtroom scene in pages 170-190, is very long. That doesn't bother me at all because, I like interrogation, and questioning, and finding out what actually happened. It especially makes it more interesting with the screenplay format, a lot easier to read the court scenes. I get a feeling of being Steve Harmon from him getting asked many questions and the jury wants to know everything. I would feel very pressured. I would make sure I tell the truth.

I think that Steve is going to end up dying or finding a way to kill himself, because he was saying "Here I am, maybe on the verge of losing my life, or the life I used to have" (p203).
Which makes me think he will take his own life.

Monster (School Book) Blog Entry #3

This is book is titled "Monster" and is written by Walter Dean Myers. I read the 100 pages and it is about a trial of men accused for walking in to a store and taking cigarettes and killing the owner of the store. Steve gets put in a prison where there are fights everyday, and no one is nice to each other. The accusation still continues and Steve's mom comes to visit Steve every once in a while.

I think that Steve Harmon is an honest guy, because he says he wants to do the right thing. He didn't do anything in the crime scene. I don't think it is right to lie, because your getting yourself or others in deep trouble. You should always speak the truth.

I like Steve Harmon, he just a guy trying to do the write thing. That is what I am all about. Steve knows he isn't guilty because he didn't do anything wrong. And he isn't like those people who fight everyday for no reason. He has a heart for people. Like Mrs O' brien, and his parents, and brother.

I feel like Steve won't be guilty because he knows he isn't. He just was the lookout and he didn't shoot Mr. Nesbitt. I still think there will be a large fight between him and another prisoner. There are lots of fights going on, so I think Steve eventually will get involved.

Monster (School Book) Blog Entry #2

This is book is titled "Monster" and is written by Walter Dean Myers. I read the 100 pages and it is about a trial of men accused for walking in to a store and taking cigarettes and killing the owner of the store. Now the accusation continues Steve Harmon isn't enjoying his time in jail. He meets some new prisoners, but aren't the nicest people on the planet and there is some talk about the death penalty.

Steve and Osvaldo were affected by peer pressure by having to tell the truth to the jury and not say false information, because the rest of the people who committed the crime are right there next to them and will tell them off. Osvaldo is a 14 year old boy who was a part in the crime. I think that peer pressure can be good, because it can motivate you to do something.

The style of dialogue in the book is very interesting. The format is more of a screenplay-like format, I personally like the style of the book because I enjoy script writing and making movies. The way the gang speaks sounds like they are uneducated. They don't put in words that are needed to make the sentence make sense. For example (pg. 81) Osvaldo: He don't have no choice. He mess with me and the Diablos will burn him up. Or (pg. 81) Osvaldo: He don't hang with nobody.

I don't think that Steve will be thrown in to the death penalty, I think it will be the person who shot the store owner. I still think there is going to be a major conflict with Steve and he will get in a major fight resulting in something bad.

Monster (School Book) Blog Entry #1

This is book is titled "Monster" and is written by Walter Dean Myers. I read the first 50 pages and it is about a trial of two men accused for walking in to a store and taking cigarettes and killing the owner of the store.

Prison life described Steve Harmon is dark and scary. He says every time he tries to talk to someone they say "I'll mess you up!". He said he saw a guy that had a knife glued to a toothbrush handle. I think the most difficult aspect is people not talking to you and being very grumpy, because I like everyone to be nice to everyone.

The setting makes the novel more dark and gritty, because the setting is jail and people are so mean to each other and in the book it explains a fight between to people.

I predict that Steve is going to get in a big fight and he will hate the jail a lot more, because people are being nasty to Steve.

Social Studies Readers Theatre Blog Post!

On Friday morning at Community time the 5/6 class did a Readers Theatre on Egypt. I thought we did good memorizing our lines, making props, and projecting our voices. Most people don't know about Hatshepsut and I feel like we did a good job of teaching them about her life and the things she did. I think since we have been studying Egypt for 2 weeks and we know the background of the story. When we presented the skit, I think some of the adults and children were confused on what was going on. What did you think about it?

Here is an interview on one of the teachers thoughts
on the readers theatre.

Hatshepsut is a Egyptian Queen. She became pharaoh when King Thutmose II died. His son Thutmose III took his place but he was so young. So Hatshepsut took his place. She made a trade expedition to punt. Where she got animals, incense, wood, and lot's of gold for the people of Egypt. She expanded trade to many different places and she rebuilt monuments.

Language Arts: My Crazy Awesome Blackout Poem!

"The Ringmaster"

The ringmaster has been fooled. He was the sickest ringmaster.
Nobody laughed low.
He could style big sheets of wrapping paper and black paint.

For this poem I tore out a page in a old book and then I circled words that were going to be my poem and then blacked out the rest of the words to make a blackout poem.
I feel like my poem is hard to read because I colored too much of the words.

Language Arts: My Super Sweet Book Spine Poem!

"Waiting For"

Waiting for Norm
 Harriet the Spy
Wolf Rider
Dragons Milk
Gentlemen

In this assignment we had to make a poem out of book spines.
What I did to complete this task was to grab 10 books and then rearrange them make them sound nice. After that I edited my poem by taking some away and then put them in a order that sounds nice.

I feel like my poem is hard to understand because it's just a bunch of words put together, but it is supposed to be a really long name.
