Science Reflection 2015


I made an amusing, educational video about all the parts of the cells for science class. You were supposed to make something that shows your understanding of the parts of cells. I chose this piece of work because it’s one of my better projects I have done in science this year. I did a paper about how people thought that a living things could just pop out of anything, but I didn’t choose it because I was very confused about writing it. I put a lot of time and effort into this video and it payed off because I got a good grade and entertained the class. I added costumes and a ton more funny parts than I normally do in my other school videos. A silly part is at the end when Chris and I did a little skit about how materials enter the cell. I learned that adding different scenes/costumes I don’t usually do make the video more fun and more interesting for me. Like when I add costumes to characters. I would like to maybe try a more serious toned video, but still put time into it.

Organ and Tissue Transplants

When a doctor is making a transplant on your body he replaces a damaged organ or tissue. An autograft is when a doctor takes a part of his/her well skin and and is transplanted to cover the sick skin.


Other times a person gets an organ or a tissue from another person. Allograft is what this is called. Like someone giving up a kidney to someone who is in need of one. A rejection is when the persons body doesn't recognize the transplanted organ.

1: Because the person will get used to the rejection eventually.
2: Because you don't need to use another person if you can use your good skin.
3: Because the DNA/cells won't match (confused)
4: It is harder to transplant an organ system because you have many organs in a system which means the longer it takes and the more work if you take each organ out individually.

Characteristics of Living Things (Science)

In order to be living you must have six characteristics, without them you wouldn't be looking at this blogpost. 


Cells - The first characteristic is cells. They are the tiniest part of the living thing. They have organelles that carry DNA strands and duplicate themselves in a stage called mitosis. 


Energy - The second component of a living thing is obtaining and using energy. Without energy you wouldn't be moving or able to function. Humans eat food that has energy stored in it.



Growth - The next trait for a living thing is growth and development. Without growth the living thing couldn’t die out. If you can’t die you're not living. Humans grow and develop along with animals every day.


Reproduce - The next characteristic of a living thing is to reproduce. It's not the essential for the survival of one living thing, but for the entire species. Without reproducing the species or itself would die out. Humans reproduce by making babies.

Respond - You also need to respond to the environment. Humans respond by making and shaping the environments to maximize their survival chances. The species behavior is changed by if it is safe or not

Adapt - The last trait is adapting to your environment. Humans adapt to many environments such as deserts, jungles, or mountains. We adapt using genetic change and development changes over time.

Shells have all of these characteristics but were once living. They were part of something larger that had the attributes but died.

Archimedes Interview!

“Give me a lever long enough and a fulcrum on which to place it, and I shall move the world.”

Vocabulary: 

Fulcrum: The point on which a lever rests or is supported and on which it pivots.
Lever: A rigid bar used to help move a heavy load with one end when pressure is applied to the other.
Load: The weight on the other side of the lever. 

What we did in this experiment was we got a fulcrum, load, and a lever. And we had a sensor that measured in nodes. We had to use the ruler (lever) and the sensor which we pushed down hard on the other end of the ruler. We had a fulcrum underneath the lever located in the middle. We would move the fulcrum to out finger each trial. A real life example would be like when you put a rock underneath a spoon and the spoon has mashed potatoes, then you make the spoon balance by evening the weight out. Then you push on the spoon, that is an smaller scale of what we did. The spoon is the lever, the rock is the fulcrum, the mashed potatoes are the load and your hand pushing down on the spoon is the input force.

The Levitating Pencil!


In this science challenge we had to make a levitating pencil! We had 6 magnets, a pencil, a mirror, and a ball of clay. We had to figure out which magnetism the magnet was, attraction or repulsion. We had to switch and turn the magnets to make the magnetic pole just right. The attraction or repulsion between magnetic poles is called magnetic force, which is basically like negative and positive, like numbers, the same with magnets. Thank god for magnetic fields, because that allows the magnets to interact with each other, like move up and down which creates a levitating pencil!

Explaining Electrical Circuits


In this small, group experiment we had to build a small electric cookie alarm. The conductor was the aluminum foil. The circuit was the cords connected to the battery. A circuit is a pathway through electricity to flow through, and the current flows through the circuit. Our battery we used for this experiment was 1.5 volts (voltage). I liked the experiment, because I love energy, I find it very interesting and geeky!

Science Fair Blog Post: Week 4!

This week in the amazing science fair, we have been working on out Interim Report. We have filled it with everything we have done so far. Our, research, question, variables, and bibliography



We completed out hypothesis we think that If the recyclable material is plastic then, the sound waves that penetrate the soundproof wall will go slower, because the plastic bottle contains air which is a gas, and gas makes sound waves travel slower. 








We decided that we will be using wool, plastic, and wood to build three walls. One with wool, one with wood, and another with plastic bottles.






 Our next step is to gather all the materials and resources we need and start to build each wall. Can't wait to begin!

Science Fair Blog Post Week 3!





This week we worked on our question and our variables. Our independent variable is our recyclable material and our dependent variable the amount of hertz that goes through the wall. Our controlled variables are the location, pitch, and distance. Our question is "How does the recyclable material affect the hertz that penetrates the soundproof wall." Our next step is to start to make the soundproof wall using recyclable material.

Science Fair Blog Post: Week 2!

In class today we played with sensors!




We had a tuning fork and had a block of wood holding the string. We pulled the tuning fork back and it hit a cylinder of wood. Then we put the sensor up to the tuning fork and recorded how many Hz the fork made. We did this with different sizes of tuning forks. I enjoyed it and it was very fun. Our project is to make a soundproof wall. This is going to be helpful in our project because we are going to need to know how to use the sensor. We all know hot to now. Next we will get the resources we need to build our soundproof wall. We still need to know what sound does not go through. That is all I got for this week in science!

Science Fair Blog Post: Week 1! It Begins!

Today we played with the sensors. We have tuning forks of all different sizes and we are going to bang them and the sensor will collect the amount if Hz (Hertz). We are not sure how we are going to bang them without banging to hard or too soft.

Science Physics Roller Coaster Post!

In science class I made a roller coaster out of tubes, and used tape and string. My coaster has a big drop then it shifts over to a loop then rolls around a stool and has another dip and then lands in a cup. I chose it because I thought it was fun, I would enjoy it if I was on it. I would probably change my place I constructed it. It was hard to build and some things got in the way like walls and boxes. My knowledge of kinetic and potential helped me with this project. In fact, I couldn't have done it without it. Because if I started down low then the marble wouldn't have enough kinetic energy to go up the hill. So I started up high to give it potential energy, which means if I put a big drop then it will give the marble speed/kinetic energy to go up the hill and loop.

I ran into a lot of problems. First my loop was too small so it made it have kinks. So I had to get clammers and put them where the kinks were. And then I put a nail in the wall at hooked a piece of string in the hose and tied it to the nail. The string kept on falling off the nail. I didn't do much to fix it. When it fell off I made the whole bigger with scissors in the tube and I would tie the string through the tube. Having a budget made it a little more intense. It kind of made it harder because I wasn't permitted to get what we needed and go! I had to keep track of how much money things were and what I bought. It took time off of building the coaster. But I feel like it did keep us organized because if we got what we needed then I would probably have a big mess. Friction had an impact because when I didn't have enough kinetic energy and add friction on to that I had to raise the hill higher and that would change the rest of the coaster. Argh, friction! I had to make a couple modifications. First the marble didn't have enough kinetic energy to go up the loop. So I made the loop smaller and it didn't get any kinks so it was a success. Then, the other mishap was the marble just flew out of the hose. So I put a cup to have it end and not go all over the place. So in the end it all worked out fine and dandy!

Science: Skate Park Assignment!

When distance changes then the kinetic and potential energy will decrease or increase. When you are going down then there is more kinetic energy because the skater is moving faster. When you move up then you have more potential energy because you are changing the distance from the ground. Kinetic and Potential energy interact with each other when potential is at it's greatest and kinetic is at it's lowest (or the opposite). Imagine a car going up hill it has more potential energy and then the car goes down a steep hill then it has a lot of kinetic energy. Energy can be transformed into the real world by a roller coaster, when the coaster going up a hill it has lots of potential energy because it is changing the distance from the ground (getting higher and higher). When it drops down then it the coaster goes fast because it has lots motion/speed. Friction affects the motion of objects by the surface the object is on and the object rubbing against each
